This Connecticut lobster roll is a delicious warm lobster roll that’s full of tender and juicy butter-coated lobster meat sitting atop a toasted brioche hot dog bun. It’s a simple lobster roll that’s perfect for the 4th of July or a summer lunch or dinner!

What is a Connecticut lobster roll?

A Connecticut-style lobster roll is always served warm and made with lobster meat coated with melted butter and piled high on a split-top hot dog bun. The main difference between a Connecticut lobster roll and a Maine lobster roll is that a Maine lobster roll is served cold with lobster meat dressed with mayo and sometimes finely chopped celery. On the other hand, a Connecticut lobster roll is served with lobster tossed in melted butter as opposed to mayo.

Ingredients

Ingredients for warm Connecticut lobster rolls with text overlay.
  • Pre-cooked lobster meat – Use any type of lobster meat – claws, tails, or knuckles. But save the claw meat for placing atop the rolls for the best presentation.
  • Hot dog buns – I used split-top brioche hot dog buns. Split-top hot dog buns also go by New England-style hot dog buns.
  • Butter – Melted butter is used to coat each morsel of lobster but you can opt for clarified butter or brown butter.

Steps

  1. Melt a tablespoon of butter and toast each side of the hot dog bun until it’s golden brown. Set this aside.
  2. Melt the remaining butter in the same pan and add the lobster meat. Toss gently to coat each piece of lobster. Season with salt and pepper to taste and optionally add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and chives.
  3. Evenly divide the lobster filling into each hot dog bun and serve immediately.

Variations

  • Clarified butter – Using clarified butter provides a richer, nuttier flavor by removing the milk solids and water from the butterfat.
  • Brown butter lobster roll – Brown butter offers a toasted, deeper flavor by browning the milk solids so that it takes on a caramel-like flavor.
