Equipment

Ingredients

Donut Ingredients

  • 1 package cake mix any flavor
  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup almonds for bunny ears, split in half length wise

Glaze Ingredients

Instructions

Prep your donut maker or oven:

  • BabyCakes: Plug in the donut maker and lightly grease the molds with vegetable oil. Let it heat for about 2 minutes.
  • Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease your donut pan or molds.

Make the batter:

  • In a large bowl, mix the cake mix, water, oil, and egg until combined. Transfer the batter to a piping bag or zip-top bag and snip the end.

Bake the donuts:

  • BabyCakes: Add about 2 tablespoons of batter to each mold, taking care not to overfill since the batter expands. Close the lid and check for doneness after 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Oven: Fill each mold ¾ full and bake for 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Transfer the donuts to a cooling rack and let them cool completely before decorating.

Decorating:

  • Melt the candy melts according to the package directions. To thin, warm them first, then stir in EZ Thins or shortening ¼ teaspoon at a time until you reach the consistency you like. Set the bowl in a larger bowl of hot water to keep the coating fluid.
  • Dab a small amount of melted candy coating on the almond halves and press two onto each donut for ears. Wait about 1 minute for them to set.
  • Dip each donut into the white candy coating and give it a little shake to smooth the surface. Return it to the cooling rack.
  • Add about 1 teaspoon of melted white candy to a small bowl. Use a toothpick to add pink candy coloring a little at a time until you reach the shade you want. Dot on a nose with a toothpick.

Notes

Coloring: Use only oil-based candy coloring. Water-based food coloring will make white candy melts seize and harden, even in a small amount.
Thinning: Thinning is optional. If you use shortening, add it slowly, since too much can affect the final texture of the coating.
Keeping the coating fluid: A larger bowl of hot water under the candy melts keeps them from hardening while you dip.
Cool first: Let donuts cool completely before dipping for an even coating.
Making with kids: Bake and cool the donuts ahead so they're ready to decorate.
Almonds: Splitting them lengthwise gives a flat side that sticks to the donut.
